Myths about laser hair removal

Many unfortunate myths have been passed around about laser hair removal, giving people the wrong idea about what it can do, as well as what it cannot do. Let’s set the record straight!
Myth: Laser hair removal is the only permanent method to rid yourself of hair.
Truth: There is no such thing as a permanent hair removal method, but laser hair removal is the closest thing we have at this time. Permanent hair reduction is a more accurate description.
Myth: A spa or nail salon can perform laser hair removal as well as a medical facility.
Truth: Laser hair removal requires a highly trained and experienced practitioner like those at Cosmetic Centers of Hawaii, who are under the supervision of a licensed physician.
Myth: Laser hair removal is painful.
Truth: Most people report that the sensation from the laser is a mild tingling or similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. Laser hair removal is generally more comfortable than waxing or electrolysis. A cooling gel is applied to the skin before and after your treatment, and non-prescription pain medication can be taken if your skin is sensitive. We also offer topical numbing cream to make the treatments less uncomfortable.
Myth: Lasers penetrate the skin and affect your internal organs.
Truth: Lasers used for hair removal only penetrate deep enough to affect your hair follicles; they cannot and do not affect your internal organs.
Myth: Blonde hair can be removed with lasers.
Truth: Although dark hair is the most ideal for laser hair removal, red-brown and brown hair can also be treated successfully. Unfortunately, blond hair is not removed effectively by lasers.
Myth: Laser hair removal causes ingrown hairs and more hair growth.
Truth: Ingrown hairs are common after shaving and waxing, but not after laser hair removal. In fact, laser hair removal significantly reduces the chances of getting ingrown hairs. Laser hair removal does not cause more hair growth either. In fact, hair that grows back is finer and lighter in color, making it less visible than before.
Myth: Laser hair removal costs a lot more than other methods.
Truth: While laser removal is more expensive, you need fewer treatments to achieve results. This makes it a more cost-effective method than electrolysis or waxing, or even perhaps shaving after you add up the cost of supplies over a span of time.
Myth: Laser hair removal cannot be performed on people with darker skins.
Truth: Laser can be used successfully on people with darker toned skin, such as Asians, Filipinos, and people of Micronesian descent. At Cosmetic Centers of Hawaii, we have multiple lasers, including an NdYag laser which is the safest laser for treating darker skin. We have treated thousands of patients with darker skin tones and have considerable experience and great success working with people within these ethnic groups.
